The Story of Kids First

Cathy-DivincenzoNearly a decade ago, Dr. Cathy DiVincenzo opened a tiny pediatric practice in a shared office space in Skokie. She had two weeks to start up her business, after leaving the practice where she previously worked, and no promises that patients would come.

Thanks to a lot of hard work, grit, charisma and love, that small practice grew to become Kids First Pediatric Partners–which today includes three other physicians, four nurse practitioners, and dozens of nurses, medical assistants and office personnel. Dr. Kathy Shepherd was the first to join Dr. Cathy in 2006, as our practice rapidly grew in its fledgling years. Dr. Adam Aronson joined in 2007 as a full-time partner, followed by Dr. Elana Comrov in 2011. The pediatricians are joined by four incredible nurse practitioners: Jean Russo, Stephanie Brennan, Karen Gentile and Patricia Lawrence.

For 10 years, Kids First was located in the First American Bank building on Golf Road in Skokie, best known for its large fish old officetank and matching decor. But with so much growth, we were thrilled to move to a state-of-the-art space in the top floor of Concourse Office Plaza, located in the same parking lot as our previous location. Our new office allows us to manage our growing practice, with more exam rooms and increased administrative space.

Thus, what started with a few devoted families from Dr. Cathy’s previous practice (complete with her own mother as a part time receptionist), became one of the fastest-growing pediatric practices on the North Shore.

Concourse Office Plaza copyDespite the growth, what hasn’t changed in the last 10+ years is our staff’s vision for creating a community where patients and their families feel at home when entering the office. To do this, we all follow a motto that sits beside the front desk: Be kinder than necessary.

We are a practice that goes above and beyond what patients need, creating a medical home that feels like a community. Families are recognized when they walk into the office and feel like part of a family.

After growing from about 100 families in the first year of the practice to 14,000 active patients today, we continue to grow while staying committed to each and every individual patient. We hope in future years to continue to be innovative by offering more new programs like Fit Club, One Book at a Time, the Easy Breathers asthma team and the monthly parenting lecture series. Most importantly, we will keep focusing on our families and doing what we do best.
